How To Perform Firmware Upgrade Remotely Using Xcalibur XP

Objectives

Firmware upgrades can be easily performed remotely. The following article provides a step-by-step description of Firmware upgrade performed remotely through the Xcalibur Management software.

Procedure

Firmware Installation Cycle:

  1. Extract and deploy the XPI files to an FTP server by using the Chip PC Installer utility.
  2. Perform remote (via Xcalibur) firmware installation.

Firmware Upgrade Prerequisites:

  • Firmware files must already be placed on the FTP server by the Chip PC Installer utility.
  • Xcalibur Agent License (XSNMP) must be installed on the Xtreme PC device(s) you wish to upgrade remotely.

Remote Firmware Installation Steps:

  1. UPGRADE WIZARD: Open the Tools menu and select the Upgrade Device(s) option, as result, the Upgrade Device(s) Wizard appears.
  2. SERVER NAME: type either the FTP server name or IP address.
  3. SERVER DIRECTORY: type the path to the target directory on the FTP Server into which firmware files were extracted by the Chip PC Installer utility.
  4. CREDENTIALS: Provide user credentials for FTP authentication.
  5. SCHEDULE UPGRADE: define the date and time you wish the remote image deployment process to occur.
  6. UPGRADE BANDWIDTH: define the bandwidth limit (if any) you wish to apply on this process.
  7. FINISH: By pressing the Finish button the wizard window will be closed and all wizard settings will be saved into the Xcalibur database and applied onto the selected device(s) as scheduled.

SELECT DEVICES:

  1. Through the Xcalibur -> Admin Option -> Directories & Devices interface, select the destined devices on which you intend to deploy the firmware upgrade.
  2. Downloading the Firmware-Pack files that correspond to the device hardware model and current firmware.
  3. Refer to article No.24 "Understanding Image Upgrade Files Naming Scheme".Download the upgrade file(s) from Chip PC web site.
