How to Minimize Network Latency Problems

Objectives

In case you encounter network latency problems, first you need a professional analysis of the problem to understand the nature of the latency and make sure it is constant and not random.

Procedure

Latency problems can result from the following:

  1. Latency is something you buy from your service provider. Anything down to speed of light +20% (30-50 msec in Europe) should be possible. The higher you pay – the better you get. Service provider can guaranty “straight line” with fastest routing.
  2. It also depends on all the latencies of the routers on the way. Try to trace your connections to problematic sites and see what you are passing through.
  3. You may be permanently routed through countries (hubs) that are far away from where you need. Direct routing will give you the shortest speed of light delays.

Things that can be done to optimize netowrkperfomance after you “squeezed” minimum latency from your network:

  1. Fine tuning of client TCP/IP settings (only Chip PC support team can control these settings)
  2. Fine tuning of ICA client settings (only Chip PC support team can control these settings)
  3. Fine tuning of ICA server settings
  4. Fine tuning of switches and routers if it is in your control (can be optimized for minimum latency through output queue settings)

Combining the above methodswill typically converge into very good results in terms of minimizing network latency.
