How to Create an RDP Connection with an LPR Printer via Xcalibur Global
1. Objectives
This document explains how to use Xcalibur Global to create an RDP connection with an LPR printer. When a session is opened using this connection, applications running within the session will be able to print to a network printer (LPR).
This procedure is based on the following steps:
Select the OU containing the target Thin Clients. Create an Xcalibur Policy that is linked to the target OU. Configure the Xcalibur Policy to create an RDP connection. Configure the Xcalibur Policy to create a connection to an LPR printer. 2. Applicable Software Versions
This document is applicable to an environment with the following software versions:
Xcalibur Global 1.1 Rev.2 Chip PC Thin Client Firmware 6.5.3 3. Procedure
Select the OU Containing the Target Thin Clients
Launch the Xcalibur Global Management Console by clicking on: Start > Programs > Xcalibur Global 1.1 > Management Console . In the Xcalibur Management Console, expand the folders under Xcalibur Directory Manager to reveal the OU that contains the target thin clients. In this example expand: Xcalibur Directory Manager \ net8.qa8 \ Chip PC \ Thin Clients Figure 1: Xcalibur Management Console - Select Target OU In the expanded folders, select the target OU (In this example Berlin ). Create an Xcalibur Policy that is Linked to the Target OU
Right-click on the target OU (Berlin in this example) to display a menu. On the menu, click Properties to display the <OU> Properties dialog box. Figure 2: Xcalibur Management Console – Target OU > Properties In the <OU> Properties dialog box, select the Xcalibur Policy tab. Figure 4: Xcalibur Policy Tab – New > TC Policy On the menu, select TC Policy to create a New Xcalibur Policy Object that will appear in the Xcalibur Policy Object Links column. Figure 5: Xcalibur Policy Tab – New Xcalibur Policy Object Type a new policy name (“Device – RDP Connection with LPR Printer ” in this example) over the default name “New Xcalibur Policy Object ”. Configure the Xcalibur Policy to Create an RDP Connection
Select the newly created policy (“Device – RDP Connection with LPR Printer ” in this example) and click Edit to open the Policy Editor window. Figure 6: Xcalibur Policy Tab – Edit New Policy In the Policy Editor window, expand the following path: <Policy Name> \ Installable Software Modules \ Connections Under Connections , Select and right-click Remote Desktop Connection . On the menu, select Add… to initiate the Add New RDP Connection wizard. Figure 7: Policy Editor Window - Installable Software Modules \ Connections In the Add New RDP Connection - Welcome dialog box: Type a name for the new RDP connection or leave the default name. Click Next . Figure 8: Add New RDP Connection Wizard Welcome Dialog Box In the Add New RDP Connection - Computer Name dialog box: In the Connection to text box, type the IP Address or the name of the RDP server (in this example: RDP.Server.Com ). Click Next . Figure 9: Add New RDP Connection Wizard Computer Name Dialog Box In the Add New RDP Connection wizard - Logon Information dialog box: Enter the desired logon information. Click Next . Figure 11: Add New RDP Connection Wizard Icon Dialog Box In the Add New RDP Connection - Information dialog box, click Advanced to open the RDP Connection Properties dialog box. Click OK to return to the Add New RDP Connection - Information dialog box In the Add New RDP Connection - Information dialog box, click Finish to return to the Policy Editor window. In the Policy Editor window, expand the following path: <Policy Name> \ Printing Solution \ LPR Printer In the right pane, Select and double-click LPR connection port# . Figure 16: Policy Editor Window – Printing Solutions \ LPR Printer In the LPR connection port# dialog box: Select Enable . Figure 17: LPR Network Printer1 Dialog Box Verify that the option Allow using this printer port is selected. Select the option Allow mapping this port into the session . Click Browse to initiate the Add Printer wizard. In the Add Printer Wizard Welcome dialog box, click Next . Figure 19: Add Printer Wizard - Local or Network Dialog Box In the Add Printer Wizard – Select a Printer Port dialog box, click Next . Figure 20: Add Printer Wizard – Select a Printer Dialog Box In the Add Printer Wizard – Select a Printer Model dialog box, select the manufacturer’s name in the left list and the model name in the right list. Figure 21: Select a Printer Model Dialog Box In the Add Printer Wizard – Name Your Printer dialog box: Figure 22: Name Your Printer Dialog Box Type in a name for the printer. Click Next . In the Add Printer Wizard – Default Printer dialog box, click Next . Figure 23: Add Printer Wizard - Default Printer Dialog Box In the Add Printer Wizard – Completing dialog box, click Finish . Figure 24: Add Printer Wizard - Completing Dialog Box In the LPR connection port# dialog box, type in the following LPR printer parameters: IP Address Queue Name Figure 25: LPR connection port# Dialog Box Click OK . In the <OU> Properties dialog box, click Close to complete the procedure and return to the Xcalibur Global Management Console. 4. Process Outcome:
Xcalibur Global now has a policy that will create an RDP connection with an LPR printer. The policy is linked to the OU that was selected. The policy will affect all devices within the OU and any child OUs (as long a there are no restrictions on policy inheritance). Movie
